The most popular Smith & Wesson J-Frame revolvers are in the "Airweight" line. They have aluminum frames, five round capacity, and only weigh about 15oz. Even lighter models are available at higher prices. The model 649 is the all steel counterpart to the model 638. The barrel is 0.25" longer. It is a bull barrel with full length lug for the ejector rod. It weighs in at a whopping 23oz, 8oz more than the 638. It costs more, weighs more, and it shoots a much more powerful round. It also shoots the .38Spl +P and .38Spl. You could load the .38Spl cases to .357 Magnum pressures, but that invites the disaster of inadvertently placing the cartridge in a .38Spl +P model and damaging or even destroying it. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode
